a discussion of style

First off, this is not a thread comparing VS and WB. It's not to debate about which is better or why one should be chosen over the other. If you want to pick a fight or get on your high horse about one software or the other, go to another thread. That subject has been beaten to death and is not relevant to this discussion.

Now with that little preface out of the way, I would like to start a reasoned mature discussion about skinner's styles and the software they use.

Specifically it seems that, in general, VS skinners create more sedate laid back styles. They tend to be unobtrusive, soft colored, and less 3D. Sort of the 1 pixel bevel type stuff.

WB skinners seem to go more for Mac-ish type glassy or gel buttons, more extravagant colors, and a more pronounced 3D.

It would seem, logically, that there would be an even mix of both styles distributed between skins created by both VS and WB skinners, but that doesn't seem to be the case. I'm curious about this.

Could it be that those skinners that produce the more sedate styles are more attracted to StyleXP and the skinners that produce the more extravagant styles are more attracted to WB?

Or maybe it is more the group collective conciousness that drives the styles? In other words, the VS skinners hang out at the same sites, forums, etc. and produce similar work to what they see on the sites they go to and the same effect happens for the WB skinners.

I would be interested in everyone's thoughts and observations.

WindowBlinds is a superset of msstyles. It can do anything msstyles can do and more. Msstyles skinners work within the limitations of the msstyles format, WB skinners, because they have more freedom, pursue other designs. Since WindowBlinds (with SkinStudio) can use msstyles, there's little incentive to create tame skins with WB these days.

yep, that´s it. i have mixed feelings on this. sometimes that can result in people pushing each other further, but at least as many times people do skins just in order to get some popularity on therefore copy other people´s elements or looks.

I think that is a large part of it. Both the limitations inhibiting radical design changes and the peer group popularity.

There are some MSStyle skinners that try to stretch the limits (WBskinner is one), but in both camps there are the 'popular skin emulators'.
I've have met a few MSStyle skinners that are branching out to WB, mainly because of the freedom it gives to innovate.

New skinners are inspired usually by what they see and use first. The first WB's I saw were from Mike Bryant,Hippy and Pixtudio...so I followed in their footsteps with textured and 3d skins.Tiggs and DanilloOC will inspire a whole new crop of 3d skinners.I think it has a lot to do wih where you hang out.

That's true ... where you hang out and whose skins you learn from or use.
